Speaking Is Silver; Keeping Quiet Is Gold: Reflections on a Prodigy and Seven Other Podcast Guests

Reaching Episode 40 feels both surprising and meaningful. When I published the very first episode of She Became CEO back in February, I had no idea how much would shift in such a short period of time. The podcast evolved from fiction-like reflections into more informative episodes around health, relationships, and business. I eventually changed the podcast name from Ill Zebra’s Transformations to She Became CEO and expanded into hosting interviews.
To mark this 40-episode milestone, I decided to do something different: I revisited each of my eight interview conversations and wrote down the dominant impression — or more accurately, the feeling — that stayed with me. Then, inspired by a Toastmasters tradition, I acted as a one-person jury and named one guest as the “gold medal” recipient. Not to compare or diminish anyone, but to highlight specific communication qualities that stood out clearly and constructively.
Before revealing the winner, here are the impressions that came to mind for each guest:

1. Paige Royal — Bold Vulnerability Rooted in Self-Confidence

Paige openly shared how emotional decisions led to serious financial difficulties and how ignoring her health caught up with her. Her willingness to speak publicly about her mistakes and lessons earned her this description.

2. Līga Brence — Courage to Dive Into the Unknown

A Latvian entrepreneur who built beauty salons, SPAs, and an eco product line, Līga has navigated both business and loss with humility and resilience. Her courage to dream and pursue adventure, even from a young age, stood out strongly.

3. Natalie Jones — Unapologetic Sexuality and Confident Ownership

Natalie, a public speaker, brought honesty and boldness to the conversation as she read two of her prepared speeches — one about family loss, the other about understanding her own sexuality. Her stories were delivered with confidence and clarity.

4. Denise Hunter (Dr. D-Nice) — Relaxing Into the Flow

Denise, a joyful and unconventional medical doctor, brings a laid-back presence into everything she does — from youth leadership to beauty pageants. Her ability to find fun and ease in life’s challenges inspired this reflection.

5. Azgari Lipshi — Laser-Focused Mind and Language

My first guest, whom I had never met before, Azgari, impressed me with her sharp, concise communication. She answered questions directly and stopped when the message was complete, something I admire because it does not come naturally to me. Her professionalism also stood out.

6. John Solleder — Youthful Curiosity

John, my first male guest, brought a refreshing curiosity about trends, technology, and community to our conversation. We kept the discussion on track despite our different dietary beliefs, and his openness made the interview flow well.

7. Stacey Gibson — Professionalism and Passion to Serve

Stacey helps people understand whether franchising is right for them. Her dedication to serving others during major life decisions — and her ability to communicate complex information clearly — made a strong impression.

8. Don McNeill — Collaborative Creativity

Don, a humorous and thoughtful speaker known as the Agent for Mark Twain, shared unforgettable stories. Even after a concussion, his memory and storytelling abilities remained remarkable. And the bonus? His wife added a few delightful stories of her own.

Why the Title: “Speaking Is Silver; Keeping Quiet Is Gold”

The title comes from a well-known Latvian proverb that I grew up with. My father often used it, and its meaning stayed with me: speaking matters, but listening — truly listening — is even more powerful.

As I reflected on all eight conversations, the value of listening, pausing, and responding intentionally became a central theme. One guest, in particular, demonstrated this through both her presence and her preparation.

The Gold Medal Recipient: Azgari Lipshi

I deliberately did not reveal her name in the title. Instead, I chose the word prodigy — not as flattery, but because it accurately describes her early achievements. At fifteen, she began working on a supplement for young girls like herself; by sixteen, she launched it publicly. That level of initiative is rare at any age.

But what earned her the “gold” here had less to do with business accomplishments and more to do with communication.
Azgari:

grasped each question quickly and answered precisely,
delivered exactly the value my audience needed,
and prepared thoroughly by sending a professionally formatted PR sheet — the only guest to do so.

Her clarity, professionalism, and respect for the collaborative process made the experience stand out.

Looking Ahead: A Shift in Voice and Audience

Another surprise came from the analytics. I expected this podcast to resonate primarily with women in their second half of life — women navigating reinvention, healing, or new directions. Many listeners are indeed in that group. But a large portion of my audience is men, and on YouTube, many are younger than I anticipated.

This tells me something important:

These themes — communication, rebuilding, purpose, presence — are universal.
Because of that, I’m curious about experimenting with my communication style. Men often listen for actionable clarity and appreciate a certain kind of structure and humor. I’m not shifting away from my core audience, but I am paying attention to who is here and what they respond to.

Why Communication Matters: Presence, Not Performance

Over the years, in roles ranging from teacher to evaluator to interpreter, I’ve learned to notice the details others overlook:

tone
rhythm
timing
visuals
lighting
angles
and how all of these influence perception

Communication is not just storytelling or voice.
It is a full presence.

This realization is pulling me toward working more intentionally with podcast hosts, podcast guests, and leaders who want to elevate how they show up — verbally, visually, and energetically.

An Invitation

I am creating a course for podcast hosts and podcast guests — a practical, focused program for anyone who wants to communicate with more clarity, more precision, and more presence. I plan to release it in January.

If you’d like to be among the first to be notified or want to join as part of my small group of early testers, email me at ilze@ilzebe.com.
I also have limited spots available for individual coaching or mentoring for those who prefer personalized support.
