Starting a Business Without Being on Camera with Paul Appolonia

What eBay Can Teach Us About Pivoting, Income, and Practical Skills

Many people want to create an additional income stream—but not everyone wants to be visible online, speak on camera, or “sell themselves” on social media.

That’s why my conversation with Paul Apollonia felt especially important to share.

Paul has been buying and selling on eBay since 2001, long before online business became trendy. Over the years, he has built a sustainable income, weathered economic downturns, and helped others—often people with limited resources—do the same.

This episode is not about hustle or hype. It’s about practical pivoting.

Pivoting When You Don’t Have the Luxury of Waiting

Paul’s story includes several major transitions: from IT work to auto detailing, to online selling. None of those pivots happened because he was chasing a dream lifestyle. They happened because circumstances changed—and he needed to respond.

One of the strongest themes in our conversation is that pivoting doesn’t require perfect timing or a financial cushion. In fact, Paul points out that having too much comfort can sometimes delay action.

For many people today—those facing layoffs, unstable employment, or rising costs—the question isn’t “What’s my passion?”
It’s “What can I realistically do next?”

Why eBay Works for Camera-Shy and Introverted People

One of the reasons I wanted to have Paul on the podcast is simple:
eBay does not require visibility.

You don’t need to:

build a personal brand
post videos
speak on camera
persuade an audience

Instead, the work happens quietly:

researching items
creating clear listings
photographing products honestly
shipping with care

For people who prefer working behind the scenes—or who simply don’t have the energy for constant online presence—this matters.

Needs vs. Wants: A Practical Business Insight

Paul emphasizes something that often gets overlooked in online business conversations:
selling needs tends to be more reliable than selling wants.

Replacement parts, practical items, and niche products often sell more consistently than trendy or aspirational goods. Over time, learning what people actually search for becomes a skill in itself.

What stood out to me is how much this approach mirrors real-world resilience:

notice what’s overlooked
solve a specific problem
do it well and consistently
