Speaking Up So One Person Feels Less Alone:
A Conversation with Kaye Squire

Some stories are shared not because they are easy to tell, but because staying silent feels heavier.

In this episode of She Became CEO, Ilze speaks with Kaye Squire, a member of the Amen University community, who chose to speak publicly about her traumatic experiences after a long period of hesitation. Kaye explains that her reason for doing so was simple: if her story could help even one person feel less alone—and see that there is a better path—then it was worth showing up.

This conversation is not about dramatic transformation or polished outcomes. It is about lived experience, responsibility, and the decision to speak while still in process.

Childhood trauma and its long shadow

Kaye shares that she has a very high ACE score—Adverse Childhood Experiences—and speaks openly about childhood abuse and neglect. She describes how early trauma shaped her sense of safety and affected her relationships later in life.

Rather than discussing trauma in abstract terms, Kaye connects it to real-life consequences: how it can influence memory, emotional regulation, and long-term brain health. She reflects on how these effects did not disappear with adulthood, but instead surfaced in new ways over time.

A suicide attempt and a turning point

In the episode, Kaye speaks about a suicide attempt in her early twenties. She does so plainly, without dramatization, as part of the larger context of how unaddressed trauma can accumulate.

Later in life, she began to notice memory challenges, which prompted her to take her brain health more seriously. She talks about seeking information, learning how trauma affects the brain, and taking concrete steps to support her wellbeing.

Resilience, relationships, and responsibility

A recurring theme in the conversation is resilience—not as a personality trait, but as something that often begins with just one safe relationship. Kaye reflects on how support, understanding, and education played a role in her ability to keep moving forward.

She also speaks about why supporting children matters deeply to her. Having lived through the long-term effects of early trauma herself, she sees prevention and early support as critical to breaking cycles that otherwise continue silently.

Why this conversation matters

Kaye did not share her story for attention or validation. She shared it because she believes that speaking honestly—without pretending certainty or resolution—can help someone else recognize themselves and feel less alone.

This episode offers a grounded look at trauma, brain health, and the quiet courage it takes to speak when the story is still tender.
